Nygren rightly asserts the study of Agape to be “one of the most central and yet most neglected in the theological field.” To him, the problem of a distorted Agape arose within the early church of the 2nd century. He outlines a mingling of New Testament Agape, Hellenism’s Eros and Jewish Law (Nomos); which he concludes led to Agape’s demise. For Nygren, agape is the properly Christian understanding of love, as is evident from New Testament texts such as the Synoptic Gospels, Paul's theology of the cross, and the identification of God and agape in the First Letter of John. Nygren therefore argues that agape is the only truly Christian kind of love, and that eros turns us away from God. Agape and Eros (Swedish: Eros och Agape) is a treatise written by the Swedish Protestant theologian Anders Nygren, first published in Swedish in two parts in 1930 and 1936.
