Beaked Hazelnut is a multi-stemmed, deciduous shrub native to North America. It features smooth, grey bark and edible nuts. Beaked Hazelnut prefers a rich sandy-clay loam but will grow on poorer sites, and can be used as an understory shrub. Corylus cornuta, the beaked hazelnut, is a deciduous shrubby hazel found in most of North America, from southern Canada south to Georgia and California.

The Beaked Hazelnut produces a smooth round nut enclosed in a very hard shell which is wrapped in a leafy case that protrudes beyond the nut like a beak. The nuts are tasty and were once commonly eaten by humans but now provide cover and food for wildlife such as deer, squirrels, pheasants and grouse.
